Dr. Spaulding Meets with Our Health and Fitness Leadership Group
Members of the Health & Fitness leadership group would like to thank Dr. Brandy Spaulding for speaking to them today. Dr. Spaulding, a 1995 Chillicothe High School alumna, spoke to students about making healthy beverage choices. While drinking soda or pop isn't a good choice, drinking diet pop/soda is even worse. Always choose natural ingredients over artificial sweeteners. There's actually more sugar in artificial sweeteners and they can cause you to gain weight instead of losing weight.
Gatorade isn't really a good choice for rehydrating your body unless you spend at least 45 - 60 minutes exercising and sweating profusely. You should forget the sports drink and grab a glass of water, you'll be a healthier person if you do. You don't need the extra carbohydrates and electrolytes.
Energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster, and Rock Star are not healthy choices either. They contain large doses of caffeine and other legal stimulants. These drinks can boost the heart rate and blood pressure; dehydrate the body; prevent sleep; cause anxiety, restlessness, abnormal heart rhythms, seizures, and even death.
Water remains the number one healthiest beverage. If you must drink something else, do so in moderation. Remember, natural is better than artificial.
Thank you, Dr. Spaulding!
